| Location Naval Station (NAVSTA) Great Lakes and the Recruit Training Command are located approximately 35 miles north of Chicago, in the far north eastern corner of Illinois. The Wisconsin state line is approximately 16 miles north of NAVSTA/RTC. Sheridan (formally known as Fort Sheridan) is located approximately 18 miles north of Chicago and 8 miles south of NAVSTA. Glenview (formally known as Glenview Naval Air Station) is located approximately 19 miles north of Chicago and 25 miles south of NS. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Naval Station Great Lakes, is also home to the U.S. Navy's only Recruit Training Center. The largest military installation in Illinois NAVSTA Great Lakes includes 1,153 buildings on 1628 acres and uses 50 miles of roadway to provide access to the center's facilities. Since its founding in 1911, the Naval Station has prepared men and women for duty in Naval Service. The Commander, Navy Region Midwest, is a flag officer responsible for Navy activities throughout a five-state area that includes Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio. In a time of reduction in American Naval Forces, the Great Lakes complex is one of the few military installations that continues to expand. NAVSTA Great Lakes, is also home to 19 of the Navy's Technical service schools. Navy Region Midwest Population 18,402 Vehicle Registration Information All vehicles that are driven on base at Great Lakes require a registration. Visitors must obtain a visitors pass. If you are stationed at Great Lakes, or plan to drive on base regularly, your vehicle must be registered. You may obtain your registration at Building 130 (just inside the main gate). Hours are from 8:00 am until 3:45 pm for vehicle registration. A visitors pass may be obtained 24 hours a day. For more information, you may call 847-688-5648. State of Illinois vehicle registration and drivers license information may be obtained at any Illinois Drivers License Facility. The facility closest to NS Great Lakes is located at 617 S. Greebay Rd Waukegan, IL (847-662-7171). Or 342 Peterson Rd, Libertyville, IL (847-362-7171). Identification Cards ID cards for military, civillian, and dependents may be obtained at the Personnel Support Activity, Building 2C (847-688-5550). Driving Directions to NS and RTC Great Lakes From the south: Take I-294 (Illinois Tollway) north. The tollway system actually calls the direction "west". Just follow the signs that say "Wisconsin" and you'll be safe. I-294 will merge with I-94. The road will then be called I-94. Follow I-94 North until you see the exit for Route 137, also called Buckley Road. Exit at 137 and at the top of the ramp, turn right. You will then be headed east. You will pass Waukegan Road (Rt. 43), and the next traffic light will be Route 41. Continue on across Route 41. You will see the Great Lakes Housing areas on your right, and a little bit further down, the Veterans Administration Hospital on the right. From the south, coming through Chicago: Take I-94 north (west) towards Wisconsin. This is the Kennedy expressway. Just north of Addison street, you will see signs for O'Hare airport and Wisconsin. Stay to the right and take I-94 towards Wisconsin. This will be the Edens Expressway. Take the Edens as far north as it will go. The expressway will end (at Park Avenue with a traffic light) and turn into Route 41. Continue north on Route 41. After the traffic light at Park Avenue, you will have 4 more traffic lights. The fifth light will be Buckley Road (Route 137). Buckley road is the next light after the Full Moon Restaurant (on your right). Turn right (east) and you will cross a set of railroad tracks. You will see the Great Lakes Housing areas on your right, and a little bit further down, the Veterans Administration Hospital on the right. From the north (Wisconsin): Take I-94 south. After you cross the Wisconsin/Illinois border, stay in the LEFT lane. You will see an exit for Route 41. Exit to your left and this will put you on Route 41. Continue south on Route 41 for approximately 10 miles. Once you see the exit for "Grand Avenue and Washington Street" you will see a traffic light for an industrial park (on your right). The next traffic light will be Martin Luther King Drive (or 22nd Street). Get into the left lane after you cross MLK Drive. The next light will be Route 137 (Buckley Road). Turn left (east) onto Buckley Road and you will immediately cross a set of railroad tracks. You will see the Great Lakes Housing areas on your right, and a little bit further down, the Veterans Administration Hospital on the right. If you are going to the Recruit Graduation, stay in the right hand lane. You will cross a set of railroad tracks, and immediately on your right will be the main gate to Recruit Training Command. Turn right and follow the guards instructions for parking. If you are going to the Naval Station: Once you cross the railroad tracks, stay in the right lane. The road will go under another set of railroad tracks and wind around to your left. At the top of the hill will be a traffic light. This will be Sheridan Road. Turn right (north) onto Sheridan Road. About a block down, you will see the main gate. Turn right at the traffic light. NOTE: If you do not have a US Government Sticker on your car, DO NOT PROCEED into the base. You will have to stop and get a visitors pass. As soon as you turn right to go into the base, you will see a parking lot on your right. Pull into this parking lot, and go inside the building (Building 130) to obtain your visitors pass. Tell the person at the desk your destination and give them your drivers license and proof of insurance to obtain the pass.
